The Birth of ME DeZign
I was taking Advanced Graphic Design at Weber State University, where I had an assignment to start my own design firm. This is probably a typical senior project for designers. While it’s more common to start as a junior designer at a design or marketing firm, it’s valuable for design students to know what lies ahead. I created my dream firm, ME Design, with “ME” being the initials of my maiden name. After graduating, I worked as an employee at various design and marketing firms, so I didn’t launch my own business right away. However, the idea for ME DeZign originated back then during my design studies.
How Did ME DeZign Actually Become a Reality?
I was working as a web content specialist at a credit union when the time came to reevaluate my priorities. My child was hospitalized in the ICU at Children’s Hospital several times and required ongoing care, making it necessary for me to work from home. It was then that I decided to pursue my passion for design and technology, taking on the challenge of balancing my professional ambitions with the demands of caring for a child with medical needs. I had a solid foundation in design and, with my MBA, a good understanding of business principles. However, I lacked practical experience as an entrepreneur. Despite this, I took a big step towards entrepreneurship in 2013.
Why “DeZign” Instead of “Design”?
When I was about to start ME Design, I was using a different domain compared to what I use now. When searching for domain names, I first looked into medesign.com, but it was already taken by someone else. I had a few alternatives; however, I believe “me-design.com” was also taken, while “me_design.com” was available. Nevertheless, I decided to go with MEDeZign.com for ME DeZign. It was a bit of an unconventional choice, as using the actual spelling of “design” would have been more common. I opted for a unique naming convention that might be slightly difficult for people to understand initially but would stick in their minds in the long term. (Also, at the time, there were no other “ME DeZign” entities on the internet, as far as I knew. Now, if you search for “ME DeZign,” a few companies appear in the search results.) With long-term goals in mind, I launched MEDeZign.com in 2014, and I’m glad I did.
